    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice test taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. There is no proctor. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes (one hour) to complete it. It is taken online and is open book, so you can refer to materials during the exam.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    The passing score is 74%, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book and application-focused, broad understanding of the Scrum framework matters more than memorisation.

    How many attempts do I get, and what if I do not pass?

    Candidates typically have three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of completing the course. If you do not pass at first, you can revisit the material and retake it within that window. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

    Do I need to attend a course before taking the CSM exam?

    Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is mandatory. The Scrum Alliance online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, which you then have 90 days to sit.

    What topics does the CSM course cover?

    The course covers the six Scrum Alliance CSM topic areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, Scrum events, Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role, including servant leadership, facilitation and impediment removal.

    Which Scrum Guide edition is the course based on?

    The course is based on the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition, which introduced the Product Goal, the Sprint Goal as a commitment of the Sprint Backlog, and the Definition of Done as a commitment of the Increment. It also aligns to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

    Do I need prior experience to take the CSM course?

    No prior experience is required. There is no formal education or work-experience prerequisite, so the course suits both those new to Scrum and practitioners who want to formalise existing knowledge. Attending the approved course is the only requirement to sit the exam.

    What learning resources are included?

    You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware and industry case studies that show facilitation, coaching and impediment removal in realistic Scrum scenarios, plus practice activities to prepare for the online exam. Passing also includes a two-year Scrum Alliance membership.

    How long is the CSM training programme?

    The CSM programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement for an approved CSM course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer.
