How long is the CSM certification valid?

The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee within each two-year cycle.

The CSM is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. Training covers Scrum theory, values, the team, events, artefacts and the Scrum Master role.

What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a 60-minute time limit. It is taken online without a proctor after course completion.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which is 37 out of 50 questions correct. The exam is open book, so you may refer to materials while you answer.

How many attempts do I get for the CSM exam?

Candidates typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course. If you do not pass at first, our trainers and practice resources help you prepare for a retake.

Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Scrum Alliance requires you to complete an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer before the exam is unlocked. Self-study alone does not qualify.

What topics does the CSM training cover?

The training covers all six areas of the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum team, Scrum events, Scrum artefacts and the Scrum Master role, all aligned to the current Scrum Guide.

How long is the CSM course?

The Certified ScrumMaster course is a 16-hour programme, usually delivered as two full days or four half-days, meeting the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement.
