What Is Value Stream Mapping?UntitledA Practical Lean Skill for Luxembourg

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique for visualising, analysing and improving the end-to-end flow of materials and information that delivers a product or service to the customer. This instructor-led training in Luxembourg turns that technique into a practical, workplace-ready skill in a single day. Rooted in the Toyota Production System and popularised by Mike Rother and John Shook in the classic guide Learning to See (1998), VSM gives your team one shared picture of how work really flows and where waste hides. You will draw current-state and future-state maps, calculate takt, cycle and lead time, and build an implementation plan you can act on. The course suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, engineers and improvement professionals across Luxembourg's industry, logistics, healthcare and financial-services operations. There is no exam; you leave with capability you can apply the next working day.

Why This Training Pays off at WorkValue for You and Your Team

    For Individuals

    For Individuals

This training helps you move from watching problems recur to actively mapping and redesigning how work flows. In one practical day you learn to build a current-state map, expose the waste in it, and design a leaner future state for a real operational scenario. Whether you work in manufacturing, logistics, healthcare or back-office services in Luxembourg, VSM gives you a portable Lean skill that employers value and that you can apply to your own processes right away.

If you want to be the person who can walk a process, see where value stalls, and lead the conversation about how to fix it, this course gives you the method and the confidence to do it.

    • Turn abstract Lean theory into a hands-on mapping skill you use immediately
    • See the waste, bottlenecks and delays that spreadsheets and reports hide
    • Draw current-state and future-state maps using standard VSM symbols
    • Calculate takt, cycle and lead time to size improvement opportunities
    • Facilitate value stream workshops with cross-functional teams
    • Build credibility as a go-to process improvement professional
    • Leave with an implementation plan you can apply the next working day
    For Organizations

    For Organizations

Group VSM training equips your operations, quality and engineering teams with one shared method for seeing and improving flow. Delivered onsite or live online, sessions can be built around a real value stream from your own business. For Luxembourg organisations under pressure to cut cost, shorten lead time and get more from constrained resources, this training creates a common improvement language that scales across teams and sites.

When a cross-functional group maps the same value stream together, silos break down and improvement stops depending on a few individuals. The result is a team that can diagnose waste and plan change on its own.

    • Give teams a shared, visual language for end-to-end process improvement
    • Expose waste and rebalance flow to real customer demand across operations
    • Shorten lead times and reduce inventory and work-in-progress
    • Feed VSM outputs directly into Kaizen events and improvement roadmaps
    • Standardise mapping practice across sites and functions
    • Build internal facilitation capability for self-sustaining improvement
    • Train a cross-functional group on a real value stream from your operation

The Skills You Will BuildPractical Lean Mapping, End to End

You will learn to map, analyse and redesign an end-to-end value stream using standard VSM symbols, moving from a current-state baseline to a costed future-state plan. Every skill is practised through hands-on mapping exercises on a realistic operational scenario.

Read and Apply Standard VSM Symbols

Use the standard VSM symbol set with confidence: process boxes, data boxes, push and pull arrows, inventory triangles, kanban, information flow and the Kaizen burst, so your maps are clear and consistent for any team to read.

    Build an Accurate Current-State Map

Select a product family, walk the value stream at the Gemba, and capture real cycle time, changeover, uptime and inventory data to draw a current-state map that shows how work actually flows today, not how it should.

Spot the Eight Wastes and the Bottleneck

Read your map to reveal the eight wastes of Lean (DOWNTIME), find the constraint that limits output, and separate value-adding from non-value-adding and necessary work across the whole flow.

Calculate Takt, Cycle and Lead Time

Work out takt time from customer demand, compare it to cycle times, and use the lead-time timeline and value-added ratio to size and prioritise the highest-impact improvement opportunities.

    Design a Leaner Future-State Map

Apply the eight future-state design questions to introduce continuous flow, pull systems and levelling, then draw a future-state map that quantifies the reduction in lead time, inventory and waste.

Turn Maps into an Implementation Plan

Translate the future state into a sequenced roadmap of workstreams and Kaizen events, set baseline metrics, and put in place the standard work needed to sustain the improvement over time.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's everything you may ask...

Value Stream Mapping is a Lean technique for creating a single visual map of the end-to-end flow of materials and information that delivers a product or service. It helps teams see waste, bottlenecks and delays and redesign the flow. This course teaches it as a hands-on, one-day skill.

Yes. In one day you gain a portable Lean skill that applies across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and services in Luxembourg. You leave able to map a real value stream and produce an improvement plan, making you more effective and more employable in operational roles.

The course suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, industrial and process engineers, supply chain and logistics professionals, and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end process flow. Six Sigma practitioners also use VSM to scope improvement projects.

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste, flow and pull is helpful, but the course introduces every concept it needs in the context of mapping, so beginners and experienced practitioners both benefit.

VSM is rooted in the Toyota Production System and Lean thinking, and was formalised for practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). There is no single governing body for the technique; the course teaches the widely used standard approach and symbol set.

    General

What is Value Stream Mapping (VSM)?

Value Stream Mapping is a Lean technique for creating a single visual map of the end-to-end flow of materials and information that delivers a product or service. It helps teams see waste, bottlenecks and delays and redesign the flow. This course teaches it as a hands-on, one-day skill.

Is the Value Stream Mapping training worth it?

Yes. In one day you gain a portable Lean skill that applies across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and services in Luxembourg. You leave able to map a real value stream and produce an improvement plan, making you more effective and more employable in operational roles.

    Who should attend this course?

The course suits Lean practitioners, operations and manufacturing managers, industrial and process engineers, supply chain and logistics professionals, and anyone responsible for improving end-to-end process flow. Six Sigma practitioners also use VSM to scope improvement projects.

Do I need prior Lean experience to join?

No. There are no formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with Lean ideas such as waste, flow and pull is helpful, but the course introduces every concept it needs in the context of mapping, so beginners and experienced practitioners both benefit.

Which framework is Value Stream Mapping based on?

VSM is rooted in the Toyota Production System and Lean thinking, and was formalised for practitioners by Mike Rother and John Shook in Learning to See (1998). There is no single governing body for the technique; the course teaches the widely used standard approach and symbol set.

What is included in the course fee?

The fee includes instructor-led training across all VSM modules, hands-on mapping exercises, courseware and templates, learner support, and a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. Ask a learning advisor for the full inclusions on your chosen format.

Do you offer group or corporate rates?

Yes. We offer corporate group training with customised schedules and volume-based pricing for teams, business units and improvement functions. Request a tailored quote for your organisation.

Is there any exam or certification fee to pay?

No. This is a non-certification course with no examination, so there is no separate exam or certification fee. You pay only the training fee for your chosen delivery format.

    What payment options are available?

We accept major credit and debit cards and bank transfers, with instalment options on selected plans. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your team.

    Assessment And Completion

Is there an exam for this course?

No. Value Stream Mapping training is a non-certification course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on mapping exercises and group discussion during the programme, and you receive a course completion record from Invensis Learning.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning once you complete the programme. This recognises your participation and the practical VSM skills you have built; it is not an external accreditation.

How am I assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you practise throughout the day with hands-on exercises, mapping a realistic current-state and future-state value stream and building an implementation plan, so you leave able to apply the method at work.

Will I be able to map a value stream after the course?

Yes. By the end of the training you can select a product family, walk and map a current state, identify waste and the bottleneck, design a future state, and turn it into a costed implementation and Kaizen plan.

Does the course lead into further Lean training?

It is a strong foundation for further Lean and operational-excellence learning such as Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt or Green Belt, Kaizen and 7 QC Tools training. VSM is a core tool used across all of these programmes.

    Course Content

What topics does the Value Stream Mapping course cover?

The programme covers Lean foundations and the eight wastes, VSM symbols and notation, building and analysing the current-state map, designing the future-state map, and translating it into an implementation and Kaizen plan, all in a single day.

What VSM symbols and tools will I learn?

You learn the standard VSM symbol set: process and data boxes, push and pull arrows, supermarkets and FIFO lanes, inventory triangles, kanban, information flow arrows, the timeline, and the Kaizen burst used to mark improvement opportunities.

    Is the training hands-on?

Yes. The course is built around practical exercises. You map both a current-state and a future-state value stream for a realistic operational scenario, so the concepts are learned by doing rather than by watching slides.

    How long is the course?

The training is delivered in one full day of about eight hours, and can also be run as two extended half-days. It covers all modules with concept explanations, symbol training, worked examples and hands-on mapping.

    What materials are provided?

You receive structured courseware, VSM templates and reference guides, worked examples and exercise materials, and a course completion certificate. Corporate sessions can also be tailored around your own processes and documents.

How do I enrol in the Value Stream Mapping training in Luxembourg?

You can enrol through the Invensis Learning website. Choose your preferred format, complete the booking, and you will receive access to the schedule, courseware and joining details. Contact a learning advisor if you need help choosing.

    What delivery formats are available?

The course is available online as live virtual instructor-led training, in the classroom, onsite at your premises, and as customised corporate group training, so you can choose the format that fits your schedule and team.

Can the course be delivered onsite for my team?

Yes. We deliver onsite and live virtual corporate sessions for teams in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, and can build the day around a real value stream from your own operation. Request a group quote to arrange this.

    How soon can I start?

New public and corporate sessions run regularly. Check the upcoming schedules or speak to a learning advisor to find the next available date that works for you or your team.
