What Is Driving Observability Demand in Kenya

    Mobile-Money Uptime Pressure

Platforms like M-PESA serve over 30 million users, where seconds of downtime are costly. Engineers who can observe distributed systems in real time are essential to keeping payments flowing.

    Observability Foundation builds reliability skills

    Cloud-Native Migration Complexity

Kenyan banks and fintechs are moving to microservices and containers, where traditional monitoring falls short. True observability across metrics, logs and traces is now needed to manage that complexity.

Learn the three pillars of observability

    Scarce DevOps and SRE Talent

Firms often search for weeks to fill DevOps and reliability roles. A recognised observability credential signals job-ready skill in one of the market's tightest talent pools.

A credential that makes you stand out

    Rising Reliability Expectations

Regulators and customers expect banking and financial services to stay available around the clock. SLO-driven observability gives teams a measurable way to meet those reliability commitments.

Master SLIs, SLOs and error budgets

    Data-Centre and AI Infrastructure Growth

Investment from Safaricom and iXAfrica is building AI-ready data centres in Kenya. Larger, denser infrastructure raises the need for standardised, vendor-neutral telemetry with OpenTelemetry.

    Instrument systems with OpenTelemetry

    Alert Fatigue and Incident Overload

Noisy dashboards and endless alerts burn out on-call teams. Observability practice replaces alert-on-symptom with burn-rate alerting and blameless retrospectives that cut the noise.

    Design smarter alerting and response

    Exam

What is the format of the Observability Foundation exam?

The exam has 40 single-answer, multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. It is an open-book exam, delivered online with proctoring through PeopleCert OnVUE or at an authorised test centre.

What is the passing score for the exam?

The passing score is 65%, which means answering at least 26 of the 40 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across all six topic areas rather than one module.

What standard is the exam based on?

The exam is based on the current Observability Foundation Exam Blueprint, also called the Body of Knowledge, published by the DevOps Institute. It covers observability principles, the three pillars, tooling, SLIs, SLOs, alerting and organisational practices.

What topics does the exam cover?

The exam spans six areas: observability principles and the three pillars, metrics, logs and distributed tracing, SLIs, SLOs and error budgets, OpenTelemetry and telemetry pipelines, alerting and incident response, and SRE, AIOps and exam preparation.

What if I do not pass the exam on the first attempt?

Our training includes mock exams, practice questions and first-attempt guidance to prepare you thoroughly. If a re-sit is needed, we can advise you on the DevOps Institute re-examination process so you can resit with confidence.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the Observability Foundation course?

You will learn what observability is and how it differs from monitoring, the three pillars of metrics, logs and traces, OpenTelemetry instrumentation, SLIs, SLOs, SLAs and error budgets, alerting strategy and incident response, and how observability supports SRE and AIOps.

Can a beginner take this course?

Yes. There are no prerequisites, so beginners to observability can take the course. Some familiarity with DevOps or IT operations helps, and the training builds concepts step by step with practical examples and support.

    How long is the training?

The programme runs for 16 hours, typically delivered over two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule format. It covers all six exam topic areas and prepares you for the 40-question exam.

What is OpenTelemetry and is it covered?

OpenTelemetry is the vendor-neutral CNCF standard for collecting metrics, logs and traces, and it is covered in the course. You will learn about its SDKs, collectors, semantic conventions and telemetry pipelines as the de facto instrumentation framework.

Are practice tests and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and full mock exams aligned to the 40-question, open-book format, so you can identify weak areas and build readiness before the real exam.
