    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice test taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide (2020).

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes (one hour) to complete it. It is delivered online with no proctor required.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book, focus on understanding the Scrum framework rather than memorising answers.

    How many attempts do I get to pass the CSM exam?

    Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course. The exam is unlocked in your Scrum Alliance member account once you finish an approved CSM course.

    Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The exam cannot be accessed without completing the course, which is why the training is a required part of certification.

    What topics does the CSM training cover?

    The course covers the six CSM areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, Scrum events, Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role. It is aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the Scrum Guide.

    Which Scrum Guide edition is the training based on?

    The training is based on the November 2020 Scrum Guide, the current edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. It introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as commitments, all covered in the course.

    Do I need prior experience to take the CSM?

    No. There is no formal education or work experience requirement, so beginners are welcome. The course suits both those new to Scrum and professionals wanting to formalise existing Scrum knowledge.

    How long is the CSM course?

    The programme runs for 16 hours, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact hours and prepares you for the online exam.
