What Is Driving Demand for Lean Skills in Canada

    The Productivity Pinch

Canadian labour productivity has stalled, and analysts point to weak process efficiency. Organisations need people who can spot and remove waste, exactly what Yellow Belts are trained to do.

    Yellow Belt builds waste-spotting skills

    Skilled-Labour Shortages

Manufacturers report persistent skilled-labour gaps, with capital projects delayed. Lean-aware team members help squeeze more value from existing processes without new headcount.

Yellow Belt helps teams do more with less

    Healthcare Under Pressure

Canadian hospitals face rising demand and patient-outcome targets. DMAIC awareness helps front-line staff support flow, safety and quality improvement projects.

    Yellow Belt supports quality improvement

    Cost and Tariff Pressure

Margin and tariff pressure across manufacturing and financial services push firms to cut waste and rework. Foundational Lean Six Sigma skills make that work possible at team level.

    Yellow Belt builds waste-reduction basics

    Supply Chain Disruption

Logistics and food producers face instability that drives automation and process optimisation. Yellow Belts support data collection and waste reduction on the ground.

    Quality Talent Pipeline

Employers need a steady feeder of improvement-literate staff before they can grow Green and Black Belts. A Yellow Belt is the recognised first rung of that pipeline.

    DMAIC Finally Made Sense

"The Yellow Belt course finally made DMAIC click for me. The trainer used real shop-floor examples, and within weeks I was helping our team map a process and cut a clear bottleneck. The mock questions made the IASSC exam far less daunting."

    Beginner Friendly and Practical

"As someone new to process improvement, I worried the statistics would be over my head. The sessions kept everything practical and clear. I passed the exam on my first sitting and now contribute confidently to our improvement projects."

Lean Tools I Could Use Right Away

"Good balance of theory and hands-on activities. The Lean tools section on 5S and Poka-Yoke was immediately useful at work. I would have liked a little more practice time, but overall it set me up well for the credential."

A Shared Improvement Language Across Shifts

"We rolled out Yellow Belt training to our production teams to build a shared improvement language. The flexible scheduling meant we could train across shifts without disrupting output, and our teams now speak the same language on waste and quality."

    Exam

What is the format of the IASSC Yellow Belt exam?

The IASSC Yellow Belt exam is a closed-book exam with multiple-choice and true or false questions, covering all five DMAIC phases. It is delivered online with on-demand proctoring or at a Pearson VUE test centre.

How many questions are on the exam and what is the pass mark?

The exam has 60 questions, with up to 6 additional unscored questions on some forms, and an allotted time of 2 hours. You need a minimum score of 230 out of 300 points to pass.

Are there any prerequisites for the IASSC exam?

No. IASSC sets no prerequisites for the Yellow Belt exam. Training and real-world experience are recommended but not mandatory, so you can sit the exam without formal education or work experience requirements.

How and where do I take the exam?

You can take the exam online through the IASSC web-based proctoring system, available on demand, or at one of the 8,000-plus Pearson VUE test centres worldwide. You purchase the exam voucher from IASSC and choose your preferred delivery method.

What happens if I do not pass the first time?

If you do not reach the 230-point pass mark, you can retake the exam by purchasing another voucher. Our trainers help you target weak areas before you resit, and an optional non-proctored evaluation exam from IASSC lets you check readiness in advance.

    Course Content

What topics does the Yellow Belt training cover?

The training covers all five DMAIC phases: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. You learn foundational statistics, process mapping, the seven wastes, Lean tools such as 5S, Kanban and Poka-Yoke, and core quality metrics like DPU, DPMO and cycle time.

Do I need prior experience or a statistics background?

No prior experience is needed. The Yellow Belt sits at a foundational, awareness level, so the training introduces statistics and tools in plain terms with practical examples. It is designed for beginners supporting improvement projects rather than leading them.

Are practice questions and mock tests included?

Yes. The programme includes practice questions and mock assessments aligned to the 60-question IASSC format, plus quizzes and exercises that help you identify weak areas and build exam readiness.

Is the courseware aligned to the IASSC Body of Knowledge?

Yes. The courseware is mapped to the official IASSC Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Body of Knowledge, covering the five DMAIC phases at the awareness level the exam tests.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. After meeting the course requirements you receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning. The IASSC credential itself is awarded separately once you pass the IASSC Yellow Belt exam.
