    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an online, open-book, multiple-choice assessment taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives, aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the 2020 edition.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. It is taken online through the Scrum Alliance portal, with no proctor required, within 90 days of completing your course.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. The exam is open book, so you may refer to materials while you take it online.

    What happens if I do not pass the first time?

    Candidates typically have up to three attempts to pass the CSM exam within 90 days of course completion. Our training and practice support are designed to help you sit the assessment prepared and confident. Verify the current attempt policy at scrumalliance.org.

    Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The online exam cannot be accessed until you complete the course, which is why self-study alone does not qualify.

    What will I learn in the CSM training?

    You will learn the Scrum framework in depth across six areas: Scrum theory and principles, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team, the five Scrum events, the three Scrum artefacts, and the Scrum Master role, including servant leadership and facilitation.

    How long is the CSM course?

    The CSM course is delivered as a 16-hour instructor-led programme, run as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. This exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement and prepares you for the online exam.

    Which Scrum Guide edition is the course based on?

    The course is aligned to the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, together with the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives. It covers the Product Goal, Sprint Goal and Definition of Done introduced in the 2020 edition.

    Do I need prior experience to take this course?

    No prior experience or qualification is required. The CSM course is designed for those new to Scrum as well as team members wanting to formalise existing knowledge, and the trainer builds concepts from the ground up.
