    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, online, multiple-choice test taken through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete an approved course. No proctor is required, and it is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes (one hour) to complete it. You access it online within 90 days of finishing your approved course.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Because the exam is open book, our training focuses on genuine understanding of the Scrum framework rather than memorisation.

    What if I do not pass the CSM exam the first time?

    Candidates typically have three attempts to pass within 90 days of course completion. Our courseware, practice questions and trainer guidance are designed to help you pass on your first attempt. Verify the current attempt policy on the Scrum Alliance portal.

    Do I have to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

    Yes. Scrum Alliance requires attendance at an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer before the online exam can be accessed. Self-study alone does not qualify you to sit the exam.

    What will I learn in the CSM training?

    You will learn Scrum theory and empiricism, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team and its accountabilities, all five Scrum events, the three artefacts and their commitments, and the Scrum Master's role as a servant leader, all aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives.

    Do I need prior Scrum experience to take the course?

    No. The CSM is a foundational certification with no prerequisites, so beginners are welcome. The course starts from Scrum fundamentals, so professionals new to agile and those formalising existing knowledge can both follow it comfortably.

    How long is the CSM training and how is it delivered?

    The CSM course is a 16-hour programme, delivered as two full days or four half-days, which exceeds the Scrum Alliance minimum contact hours. It is offered live virtual and onsite, led by a Certified Scrum Trainer.

    Which Scrum Guide edition is the course based on?

    The course is based on the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition, together with the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives. This edition introduced the Product Goal and framed the Sprint Goal and Definition of Done as team commitments.
