What is the format of the CSM exam?

The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice test taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. It is taken online without a proctor, and it is open book, so you may refer to materials during the exam.

What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

You need 74% to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across Scrum theory, values, the team, events, artifacts and the Scrum Master role.

What if I do not pass the exam the first time?

You typically have up to three attempts to pass within 90 days of completing the course, so a first miss is not a setback. Our exam preparation and the open-book format help most learners pass comfortably.

Do I need to attend a course to sit the CSM exam?

Yes. Attending an approved CSM course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer is mandatory. The Scrum Alliance online exam is unlocked only after you complete the course, and you have 90 days to sit it.

What will I learn in the CSM training?

You learn Scrum theory and the three pillars, the five Scrum values, the Scrum Team accountabilities, the five Scrum events, the three artifacts with their commitments, and the Scrum Master's servant-leadership role, all aligned to the CSM Learning Objectives.

Do I need prior experience to take the course?

No. There is no formal education or work-experience requirement for CSM. The course suits beginners new to Scrum as well as practitioners who want to formalise hands-on experience, and the trainer builds concepts from the ground up.

How long is the CSM course?

The instructor-led CSM programme is a 16-hour course, delivered as two full days or four half-days depending on the schedule. It meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hour requirement for CSM.
