    Do I need experience or a degree to take the CSM?

    No. There is no formal education or work-experience requirement. You do need to attend an approved CSM course delivered by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer before you can sit the exam, which this programme provides.

    Which standard is the CSM based on?

    The course and exam are based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, the November 2020 edition by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. It covers Scrum theory, values, the team, events and artefacts.

    How long is the CSM certification valid?

    The CSM is valid for two years. To renew, you earn 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay the Scrum Alliance membership renewal fee every two years. SEUs can be earned through training, conferences, coaching and self-study.

    What is the format of the CSM exam?

    The CSM exam is an open-book, multiple-choice test taken online through the Scrum Alliance member portal after you complete the course. It is based on the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide, and needs no proctor.

    How many questions are on the CSM exam and how long is it?

    The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 60 minutes to complete it. It is taken online and is open book, so you can refer to materials during the exam.

    What is the passing score for the CSM exam?

    You need 74 per cent to pass, which means answering at least 37 of the 50 questions correctly. Focus on broad understanding across Scrum theory, values, the team, events and artefacts.

    When can I sit the exam and how many attempts do I get?

    You can access the online exam within 90 days of completing the course. Candidates typically have up to three attempts within that 90-day window. Verify the current attempt policy on the Scrum Alliance portal.

    What happens after I pass the CSM exam?

    You accept the Scrum Alliance licence agreement to activate the credential, then receive your CSM digital certificate and badge, a two-year Scrum Alliance membership, and a listing in the certification directory.

    What topics does the CSM training cover?

    The training covers the six CSM topic areas: Scrum Theory and Principles, Scrum Values, the Scrum Team, Scrum Events, Scrum Artefacts and the Scrum Master Role, all aligned to the Scrum Alliance CSM Learning Objectives and the current Scrum Guide.

    Can a beginner take this course?

    Yes. The CSM is a foundational certification with no prerequisites, so beginners are welcome. The trainer builds concepts from first principles, with hands-on facilitation practice and examples to support learners who are new to Scrum.

    How long is the CSM course?

    The instructor-led CSM programme is delivered as 16 hours of training, typically over two full days or four half-days, which meets the Scrum Alliance minimum contact-hours requirement for the course.

    Are practice questions and materials provided?

    Yes. You receive Scrum Alliance aligned courseware, industry case studies, practice questions and revision aids to prepare for the online CSM assessment and to apply Scrum at work.

    Is the course delivered online or in a classroom?
