What Is Quality Function Deployment?UntitledA Customer-Driven Design Method

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a structured, customer-driven methodology that translates customer requirements, known as the Voice of the Customer, into specific technical, engineering and process characteristics at every stage of product and service development. Developed in Japan by Yoji Akao and Shigeru Mizuno and first applied at the Kobe Shipyard in 1972, QFD uses the House of Quality matrix to make sure customer needs drive every design decision. This instructor-led course teaches you to capture and structure the Voice of the Customer, build and interpret the House of Quality, prioritise design trade-offs, and cascade requirements through the four QFD phases: product planning, parts deployment, process planning and production planning. You also see how QFD supports Design for Six Sigma and DMAIC projects. For product designers, quality engineers and product managers across Cameroon's manufacturing, food and beverage and consumer goods sectors, QFD is a practical way to design quality in from the start and reduce costly late redesigns.

What Is Driving Demand for QFD Skills in Cameroon

Quality Designed in, Not Inspected In

Many Cameroonian manufacturers still catch quality problems at final inspection. QFD moves quality upstream, so customer needs shape the design before production begins.

    QFD builds customer-driven design skills

    Bridging Marketing and Engineering

Customer insight often gets lost between commercial and technical teams. The House of Quality gives both a shared language to translate needs into design specifications.

QFD builds Voice of the Customer skills

    Competing on Product Value

As import-substitution grows, local firms must match imported goods on quality and cost. QFD helps prioritise the features customers value most within tight budgets.

    QFD builds prioritisation skills

    Reducing Costly Redesigns

Late design changes drain thin margins in food, cement and consumer goods. QFD surfaces design conflicts early, cutting rework and speeding time to market.

    QFD builds design trade-off skills

    Adding Value to Local Commodities

Agro-processing and cocoa firms need to turn raw materials into products customers prefer. QFD structures that translation from customer requirement to process control.

    QFD builds requirement-to-process skills

    Scarce Cross-Functional Skills

Cameroon's talent pool is strong in production but thin in structured, customer-driven design methods. QFD skills help professionals stand out to employers.

Cameroon's manufacturers, food and beverage producers and consumer goods firms are under pressure to launch products that meet customer needs first time. QFD skills put you on the right side of that shift.

    Today

Design decisions rely on opinion and assumption about what customers want

    After QFD

You base every design choice on structured Voice of the Customer data

    Today

Customer needs get lost in the handoff from marketing to engineering

    After QFD

You trace each requirement to a measurable engineering characteristic

    Today

Design conflicts surface late, during costly prototype testing

    After QFD

You spot trade-offs early using the correlation roof of the House of Quality

    You master QFD

    Before

Quality is inspected in at the end, not designed in at the start

    Now you have

A method to build quality into products from the very first requirement

    Before

No shared tool linking customer needs to parts and process decisions

    Now you have

A four-phase QFD cascade that connects strategy to production control

    Before

Limited standing in cross-functional design discussions

    Now you have

The confidence to facilitate a House of Quality workshop for your team

    Before

A generic skill set common in Cameroon's product and quality roles

    Now you have

A practical, cross-industry capability that helps you stand out

"The difference between a product that sells and one that fails is rarely engineering skill. It is whether the design was built around what the customer actually needs."

We accept common payment methods and can arrange corporate invoicing for group bookings. Speak with a learning advisor to choose the option that suits you or your organisation.

    Assessment

Is there an exam for the QFD course?

No. This is a non-certification skills course with no examination. Learning is reinforced through hands-on House of Quality construction exercises, case studies and team discussion during the programme.

Do I receive a certificate after the training?

Yes. You receive a course completion certificate from Invensis Learning after finishing the programme. It recognises that you have completed practical QFD training, though it is not a formal certification from an external awarding body.

How am I assessed during the course?

There is no formal assessment. Instead, you learn by doing: structuring the Voice of the Customer, building a full House of Quality and calculating column importance through guided exercises and case studies throughout the day.

    Is QFD a certification?

No. QFD is a methodology, not a certification. This course builds practical QFD and House of Quality skills you can apply immediately; it does not lead to an exam-based credential from a governing body.

Will this help with my Six Sigma projects?

Yes. QFD is a core tool in Design for Six Sigma (the DMADV Measure phase) and in DMAIC (the Define phase). The skills you gain apply directly if you work on or plan Lean Six Sigma projects.

    Course Content

What will I learn in the QFD course?

You will learn to capture the Voice of the Customer, build and interpret the House of Quality, prioritise design trade-offs, resolve conflicts using the correlation roof, and cascade QFD through its four phases from product planning to production control.

What is the House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central QFD planning matrix. It links customer requirements to measurable engineering characteristics, rates their relationships, benchmarks against competitors, and sets design targets, all anchored to customer priorities.

Does the course cover the four phases of QFD?

Yes. You learn the full four-phase cascade: product planning (the House of Quality), parts deployment, process planning and production planning, keeping traceability from customer need through to quality control.

Does QFD apply to services, not just products?

Yes. The course covers QFD for manufacturing, services such as healthcare and financial services, and software. The House of Quality applies anywhere customer requirements must be translated into design or delivery specifications.

    What practical exercises are included?

You work through structuring customer needs with an affinity diagram, classifying them with the Kano model, building a full House of Quality from a realistic scenario, calculating importance and identifying design hot spots.
