Why IT Governance Assessment Matters in Canada

    Rising Regulatory Assurance Demand

OSFI, PIPEDA and provincial privacy rules push Canadian firms to prove control effectiveness. Formal, ISO/IEC 15504 aligned capability assessment is the evidence regulators and boards now expect.

COBIT 5 Assessor builds formal assessment skills

    Audit Without a Capability View

Many teams can test controls but cannot rate how mature a governance process is. The PAM and its six capability levels give leaders a defensible maturity picture to act on.

COBIT 5 Assessor rates process capability, not just controls

    Banking and Insurance Scrutiny

Canadian banks and insurers face intense cyber and operational-risk oversight. Credentialed assessors help demonstrate governance maturity across complex, regulated IT estates.

COBIT 5 Assessor supports BFSI assurance

    Public-Sector Modernisation

Federal and provincial digital programmes need accountable, evidence-based governance reviews. Formal COBIT 5 assessments provide a structured, comparable basis for improvement.

COBIT 5 Assessor fits government assurance needs

    Assessor Talent Scarcity

Canada has many IT auditors but few professionals qualified to run formal capability assessments. Assessor is the specialist step that sets holders apart.

COBIT 5 Assessor makes qualified assessors rare

    Cloud and Third-Party Risk

Rapid cloud adoption and vendor dependence widen the governance gap. Structured assessment shows where oversight processes are managed, established or falling short.

    Exam

What is the format of the COBIT 5 Assessor exam?

The exam is open book and objective, based on the COBIT 5 Assessor Exam Syllabus (2024 version). It has 8 questions, each worth 10 marks, for 80 marks in total. Only the COBIT 5 Assessor Guide: Using COBIT 5 and the COBIT Process Assessment Model are permitted.

How long is the exam and what is the pass mark?

You have 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete the exam. The pass mark is 50%, so you must score 40 marks or more out of 80. Because it is open book, efficient navigation of the permitted materials is essential.

How and where is the COBIT 5 Assessor exam delivered?

The exam is delivered through PeopleCert, either online proctored via the OnVUE system, available 24/7, or at authorised test centres. You can sit it from home or office in Canada, or at a test centre, whichever suits you.

What books can I use during the exam?

What if I do not pass on the first attempt?

You can resit the Assessor exam through PeopleCert; re-sit policies and fees are confirmed at booking. Our training focuses on scenario practice and exam technique so you go in prepared. Ask us about the retake support included in your plan.

    Course Content

What topics does COBIT 5 Assessor training cover?

The training covers the five syllabus areas: the overview of COBIT 5 process assessment, the Process Assessment Model, capability levels and process attributes, assessment planning and execution, and evidence, rating and reporting, all at application and analysis level.

What is the COBIT 5 Process Assessment Model?

The PAM is the ISO/IEC 15504-aligned model used to assess COBIT 5 process capability. It has two dimensions: the process dimension (the 37 COBIT 5 processes) and the capability dimension (six levels from Incomplete to Optimising), assessed through nine process attributes.

Do I need prior experience to take this course?

You need COBIT 5 Foundation, and Implementation is recommended, because the Assessor exam builds on both. Practical audit or governance experience helps. The training then focuses on the assessment method rather than re-teaching Foundation content.

Are practice questions and mock exams included?

Yes. The programme includes scenario-based practice and mock exams mapped to the Assessor syllabus, so you can rehearse rating and reporting decisions and build confidence with the open-book format before exam day.

Is the courseware aligned to the current syllabus?

Yes. The courseware is aligned to the COBIT 5 Assessor Exam Syllabus (2024 version), the COBIT 5 Assessor Guide and the COBIT Process Assessment Model, so what you study matches what the exam assesses.
